Origin : Simao, Wenshan ; it is distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hubei, Hunan and Fujian. 

 

Altitude : Attached to trunks, rotten wood or understory rocks in mountain broad-leaved forests 1000-1620 m above sea level. 

 

Efficacy : Stem as medicine, D. nobile Lindl.

Stems : Stems erect or oblique, thinly cylindrical, usually 10-30 cm long, 3-5 mm thick, unbranched, with few to many nodes, internodes 1. 5-3. 5 cm long, dry yellowish black.

Leaves : Leaves leathery, 2-rowed, several, alternate in the upper part of the stem, narrowly oblong, 3-5 ( -7 ) cm long, 6-12 ( -15 ) mm wide, apex obtuse and slightly unequally 2-lobed, base sheathed ; leaf sheath leathery, old black stain, often cup-shaped opening after drying.

 


Flowers : racemes 1-4, emerging from the upper part of old fallen leaves, with 1-2 flowers ; peduncle 3-5 mm, base with 3-4 wide ovate membranous sheaths ; bracts membranous, pale white, middle or apex chestnut, 4-7 mm long, apex acuminate ; pedicels and ovary white, 2-3 cm long ; flowers large, milky white, sometimes with light red, developing ; middle sepals oblong-lanceolate, ( 2.3- ) 2.5-4 cm long, 7-10 mm wide, apex acuminate, with 5-6 main veins and many branches ; lateral sepals triangular - lanceolate, as long as middle sepals, 7-10 mm wide, apex acuminate, base obliquely wide, with 5-6 main veins and many branches ; calyx sac hemispherical, 1-1.5 cm long ; petals subelliptic, ( 2.3- ) 2.5-4 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide, apex acute, with 5-6 main veins and many branches ; lip valve ovate lanceolate, slightly shorter and wider than sepal, 3-lobed or not obvious 3-lobed, base cuneate, base central with a corpus callosum ; lateral lobes erect, semicircular ; middle lobe ovate, apex acute ; lip disc center with 1 yellowish green patch, densely covered with short hairs ; the column is about 4 mm long ; stamens ca. 1. 5 cm long, often with lilac spots inside ; medicine cap nearly hemispherical, densely covered with fine mastoid.

 

Flowering : April-May.
